Living Green

Living Green is a common term for “ecological living”, that is, conducting one’s life with awareness, respect and support for nature and the health of the ecosystem. It includes a consciousness to conserve resources and energy, live a healthy life style, and manage waste in an environmentally responsible manner.

There are a multitude of day to day practices that could fall under Living Green; we have grouped them into five broad issues of Energy Efficiency, Health, Food, Transportation, and Waste Management.

Article Details: Westport, Conn., became the latest of a handful of communities to ban some plastic bags. The bags, which have only a brief, useful life, can survive forever in landfills and are of enormous concern to not only environmentalists but local officials who are running out of places to put their trash. Americans use and dispose of at least 100 billion bags every year. And about only 5 percent of all plastic bags are recycled nationwide.

Article Details: The world will experience a growing risk of conflicts over food, energy and water in coming years. The population rises each year by about 80 million people, with most of the increase in impoverished regions already facing environmental stress. Climate change, water scarcity and tighter oil supplies will add to the stresses. The tendency might be to look to the military for solutions. We'll need to keep in mind that engineers and doctors will be the only ones who can truly keep us safe.

Article Details: Government practice is to rid lakes and rivers of raw sewage and industrial pollution by converting it all into a free, nutrient-rich fertilizer. A farmer's cows died by the hundreds after his land was poisoned by sludge from the waste treatment plant. A 30-year government policy encourages farmers to spread millions of tons of sewage sludge over thousands of acres each year as an alternative to commercial fertilizers. The program is still in effect.

Fact Details: The average American consumes over 25 times more resources than the average person from a developing country. That means that a family in a developing country would have to have 75 children to have the same environmental impact as an American family with three children!
