For those of us that live in the Rockies, we grimace as we see miles and miles of pine forests with brown needles. Now our beloved aspens are threatened as well. In this December 2008

by Michelle Nijhuis, the cause of Sudden Aspen Decline or "SAD" is believed to be related to bark beetles that are attacking aspens groves in increasingly large numbers following long periods of drought and higher temperatures. Even more worrisome is evidence that the groves are not regenerating themselves. The aspens are to Colorado and the western states what the palm trees are to Florida and other southern states. It will be a sad day when we lose our aspens.
